Celebrating Canadian Events in Washington DC & Northern Virginia

Celebrating Canadian Events in Washington DC & Northern Virginia

Did you know that ~800,000 Canadians live in the US? They can usually be found in hockey arenas or enjoying a beer or two with our American friends. Also, Canada Day, the equivalent of the 4th of July, is celebrated on July 1st. Another little-known fact is that Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” (renamed from Columbus Day).   If you are looking for Canadian food or events, you can check out these events in Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia

Canadian Embassy Celebrations

First, contact the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, and check for updates on X or Facebook. Snag an invite to a party!

Eat, Drink, and Be Canadian

Le Mont Royal is a French-Candian disco, restaurant, and listening bar in Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C. This is a truly a Canadian experience in the area, and they describe themselves as “a two-level Montreal-accented Adams Morgan rendez-vous, where it’s Champagne, Canadian oysters, and duck confit poutine upstairs — and disco, drinks, and dancing down below.”

For a true Canadian celebration, head to O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub in Arlington. This spot is renowned for its lively Canada Day bash, complete with live music, authentic poutine, and a wide selection of Canadian beers like Labatt Blue and Molson Canadian. It’s the perfect place to meet fellow Canadians and share a few laughs.

Elephant and Castle is a Canadian chain of English pub-style restaurants with a restaurant in Washington, D.C. There is little Canadian content, but if you are familiar with the restaurant in Canada, you can enjoy it in the DC area as well.

Finally, Enjoy an Empress Gin cocktail at the Four Seasons Hotel Lounge in Washington, DC. Empress Gin was created at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, and has a unique purple tint due to the tea-based botanicals. As an aside, Tea at the Empress is a bucket list item for Kelly, and it could happen in 2024.

Canada and Virginia are Good buds

According to Connect2Canada’s article – Sorry lovers, Virginia is for Canada, too, “Canada is Virginia’s No. 1 customer. Virginia sells more goods to Canada than it does to its next largest export market (China). There are over 260 Canadian-owned businesses operating in Virginia, contributing 16,550 jobs and $1 billion in salaries throughout the commonwealth. These Canadian-owned companies, including Stantec, Nutrien Ag Solutions, and CAE, are major contributors to Virginia’s economy. Over 280,000 jobs in Virginia depend on trade and investment with Canada.” So let’s all celebrate together, Eh?
